OUR WORK
Modzi Arts is a non-governmental organisation, located in Lusaka, Zambia. (“Modzi” meaning “one” in Njanya dialect). It was established in 2016 with the vision of providing a space for knowledge exchange, experimenting, engagement, dialogue and platform within the arts sector in Zambia. Modzi Arts aims to grow the multidisciplinary contemporary art and cultural scene and make it more visible within the Zambian society, by creating a space that is easy to access, offering different art activities. The professional art and cultural scene in Zambia has expressed the need for tools in the development of artistic production through resources like work space, networking, platform for showcase, exposure, education and creative funding.
Modzi Arts came into existence after research done by artists and would-be artists who struggled to pursue artistic ventures. The realization was that ultimately, the diversity and quality of works created by the Zambian artistic community, suffered greatly. We have worked towards empowering and improving the quality of Zambian artistic content as a means of strengthening the art scene as well as increasing the livelihood for marginalised groups, specifically women and youth through enhanced artistic development. As a subsequent aim, we strive to create opportunities for cultural contributions towards an increased self-image of the Zambian art community.
To realize that we work in different fields and with different formats:
Modzi Residency | For us strengthening the arts and cultural scene means all of us should explore our creative sides. Doing that together can be great fun which is why we regularly invite amateurs and professionals to come to Modzi to get creative together and spend time either to knowledge develop, reflect, research or create new bodies of work. We have two funded resicdency a year with Afro Luso and Rackless Kazi. Then we have self funder residency.
Modzi Sukulu | Art has a different meaning for different people. It can be a hobby or it can be an interest but it can also be a job where more than talent is needed. At Modzi we offer all different kind of approaches to the arts. As a student at our school you can follow up on your hobby or develop a new interest. At the same time we also support artists through workshops to grow and professionalize their work.
Modzi Book | We have different formats in the field of literature. One format is books and breakfast, where we serve pancakes to all booklovers while they meet, discuss and exchange books. As well as where we have a growing book library where member artsits can make use of the space.
Modzi Live | Our live events give you the opportunity to enjoy music from national and international artists. Artists are invited into the space to perform new bodies of work.
Modzi Network | We believe that a strong cultural scene needs to be well connected – beyond different fields, ages and social boundaries. Therefore we organize networking events where artists can meet like-minds, challenge one another and find variable connections.
Modzi Talk | We host panel discussions and talks of art and cultural relevance to the public. We aim at thought provoking discussions and audience members are always invited to share their opinion and questions.
Modzi Party | We offer Parties with different DJ’s and Rackless Kazi and make sure different genres are represented - come and celebrate with us while mingling with the creative scene of Lusaka!
