Lady Locs

​Martha Mutale, aka Lady Locs is a poet and advocate that found a love for merging different sounds together through the Rackless Kazi DJ residency program 2023 organized by Modzi Arts in Lusaka Zambia. As a poet, most of Martha’s work speaks on political identity, education, and self-awareness as a Zambian woman.  Martha recently relocated to Zambia after living abroad in Canada for most of her life. Having found very few female or non-binary DJs in Halifax, Canada and even fewer who are Black or African, it was difficult for Martha to see herself in that role or seek guidance from others who share that experience.  Martha has always loved music since her choir days in church, but struggled to connect with music in a meaningful way since those days. Therefore, attending the residency gave her liberation to burst her creativity as a DJ.
