MULTIDISCIPLINARY ARTIST RESIDENCY Modzi Arts welcomes artists and art practitioners, of all disciplines, to participate in our self-funded Residency Program, for a duration of 1 week to 3 months.
The residency takes place in the vibrant city of Lusaka, Zambia and is an opportunity for contemporary, local and international artists to push the boundaries of cross regional artistic practices in the African context. Through our network Modzi Arts provides curatorial support, collaborative opportunities and concept development to those who are looking to expand their work and connect with others during creatives. |
ARTIST IN RESIDENCE | KLAUS HARTMANN

Klaus Hartmann was born in 1969 in Eisleben, a small town in former East Germany. Currently he lives in Berlin. After an apprenticeship as orthopaedic shoemaker, he studied at the Art Academies in Hamburg and Vienna. He has travelled widely in Rwanda and Tanzania. In Tanzania he conducted workshops about painting at Bagamoyo College of Arts in collaboration with the Goethe Institut Dar es Salaam.
The paintings of Klaus Hartmann are picturesque constructions that originate from the artist’s detailed observations. Frequently, he integrates thematic breaks into his pictures that may be interpreted as reflections on society. Early painting themes are garden plots, fairs, Ferris wheels and roller coasters, billboards, rails, pedestrian bridges, different formations of bushes and Chinese restaurants, among others. Between 2006 and 2015, he painted a series of Tanzania paintings that consist predominantly of landscapes.
His paintings have been exhibited in solo shows and group exhibition since 1998 at museums, galleries and non-profit art spaces mostly in Germany but also international in Luxembourg, New York, Greece and Finland among other and at art fairs including Art Cologne, Liste Basel, FIAC Paris, Armory Show New York, Artforum Berlin and Art Bruxelles. 2017/18 he exhibited at the East Africa Art Biennale which took place in Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi.
